From global to local
Spanish localisation
As you probably already know, there isn’t really one single universal Spanish language. Many Spanish words and phrases can be singular to a particular area and would be as foreign to an Spanish speaker from outside the region as words from Mandarin or Ewokese. On the other side, there are some words that may be used in all Spanish-speaking countries, but which have entirely different meanings depending on which of those countries you’re in.
As such, if you’re planning on expanding your business to one of these Spanish-speaking countries, it’s important to employ the right language. You want the language to sound as natural as possible to the locals, but you also want to avoid mistakenly offending anyone. Therefore, only qualified and experienced Spanish translators can deliver the right and appropriate content translating from one language to another.
Going global
Spanish, a world language
The Spanish language is the second most widely spoken language in the world both in terms of numbers and speakers and in terms of number of countries. Today, there are more than 400 million Spanish-Speakers worldwide and Spanish appears as the official language in 21 countries spread across Latin American countries, Spain in Europe and Equitorial Guinea in Africa.
Although the Spanish language was born in Spain, the country with the most Spanish-Speakers is nowadays Mexico, with approximately 110 million speakers. It is also a language used by numerous known artists and writers around the world like Cervantes, Picasso and García Márquez. Thus it is a vehicle of international communication and an important language in international politics, economics and culture.
Cultural knowledge
Spanish language history
The Spanish language, also known as “Castellano” in Spain, belongs to the Romance languages of the Indo-European language family. It is derived from Vulgar Latin like most of romance languages and has grown from a provincial dialect to the rise of the Castile Kingdom. Initially a small enclave on the eastern edge of the Kingdom of León Castile played a leading role in the Reconquest and by the 14th century it controlled all of the Spanish Peninsula except Portugal, Navarre, Aragon and the surviving Mulsim Kingdom of Granada.
It is only in 1479, with the unification of Castile and Aragon by the Catholic Kings, that the modern Spanish nation-state was born. Shortly afterwards Columbus’s discovery of America, the Spanish language came to dominate the American colonies too.
Regional differences
Spanish dialects
The Spanish language can vary significantly from one country to another. With a presence in 21 countries, a lot of regional dialects have emerged and you can notice differences in terms of spelling, vocabulary and pronunciation. While the comparison isn't completely accurate, the differences between Spanish of Spain and Spanish from Latin America could be compared to the differences between British English and American English.
With a few exceptions — some local accents can be difficult for outsiders. Also, there can be regional differences, more so in the spoken language than in writing. While it's easy to think of Latin American Spanish as one entity, you should note there are differences in the Spanish of various countries in the Western Hemisphere.
