Meet our Danish translators

They have years of experience and know the language in all its little details and complexities. With all of them being native-speakers and having followed specific training courses, they have certifications that recognize their language level and qualify them as expert Danish translators.

From global to local

Danish localisation

As you probably already know, there isn’t really one single universal Danish language. Many Danish words and phrases can be singular to a particular area and would be as foreign to an Danish speaker from outside the region as words from Mandarin or Ewokese. On the other side, there are some words that may be used in all Danish-speaking countries, but which have entirely different meanings depending on which of those countries you’re in.

As such, if you’re planning on expanding your business to one of these Danish-speaking countries, it’s important to employ the right language. You want the language to sound as natural as possible to the locals, but you also want to avoid mistakenly offending anyone. Therefore, only qualified and experienced Danish translators can deliver the right and appropriate content translating from one language to another.

Danish language history

If you were a fairytale lover in your younger years, you surely would have read and enjoyed “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, “The Ugly Duckling” and “The Little Mermaid” written by the Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen.

Danish, as part of North Germanic languages, belongs to the East Scandinavian Branch together with Swedish. In the past, almost all scandinavian languages were similar, but Danish over time began to develop its own characteristics. During the period when the Vikings spread the Old Norse language throughout Northern Europe, they used the runic letter from the Danish language. The earliest records of Danish runic script date from about AD 250, and the first manuscripts were written in clear Danish dating from the 13th century.

Danish grammar and pronunciation

For an English-Speaker, learning Danish can seem easier than for other foreign speakers as the two languages have quite similar vocabulary and grammar.

However, this is not really true. If you’re an English-speaker or not doesn’t make a difference as Danish is a difficult language to learn, especially when it comes to pronunciation. For beginners trying to learn Danish, correctly pronouncing certain words can be a significant challenge, partly because familiar letters have different sounds and partly because letters like æ, ø and å are completely unfamiliar. Mispronunciation can lead to real confusion, but once you recognize the differences in the alphabet, it becomes much easier to pronounce words you’ve never seen or heard before.

If you just have a look at the table, you will notice the difference between written and spoken Danish.

Denmark, a true innovation leader

Danish today is spoken by more than 5 million people. Also, it’s studied in the schools of Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland. In Northern Germany, Danish is spoken by about 50,000 Danes who live there. Despite its small size, Denmark has a lot to offer. It’s a knowledge-based society, internationally recognized with leading industry and research in areas such as greentech, biotech, pharmaceutical, sciences, telecommunications, IT and design.

On top of that, there’s a huge wealth of works created in the Danish language by many influential writers, including fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen, a Nobel Peace Prize winner Johannes Vilhelm Jensen and existential philosopher Soren Kierkegaard.

Danish alphabet

The Danish language is one of its kind. The modern Danish alphabet has 29 letters compared with 26 in the English alphabet. The first 26 letters of the Danish alphabet are exactly the same as in English, however Danish has three extra letters at the end of the alphabet. The three extra letters at the end are æ ø å.

Knowing the order can be helpful for anyone who is trying to find a town or street name in the index section of a map. It can also be helpful when you are trying to translate a word with the help of a Danish-English dictionary. So, the Danish alphabet is as follows:

a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z æ ø å
